Please keep in mind that these guidelines only apply to people with F or J immigration status.
Did you forget to get a travel signature on your I-20 or DS-2019 before leaving the United States? Or have you misplaced your I-20 or DS-2019?
Please visit the Frequently Asked Questions section below for guidance on what to do if you lack a travel signature or do not have your I-20/DS-2019.
Can I enter the United States on a tourist visa?
Please do not try to enter the United States as a tourist. Taking lessons while on B or Visa Waiver (called ESTA) is illegal under US immigration law. This will have both immediate and long-term repercussions. Furthermore, changing immigration status within the United States typically takes 8-12 months, and enrolling in courses is not authorized throughout the application waiting time.
Will I be able to re-enter the US if I don't have my I-20 or DS-2019?
If you do not have your I-20 or DS-2019, your airline may refuse to let you board a US-bound flight. If at all feasible, adjust your flight schedule so that you can board your US-bound flight with your original I-20 or DS-2019. You can obtain a replacement document using ISSS Link. You can alternatively arrange for the documents to be mailed to you at your own expense by submitting a shipping request through eShipGlobal. Instructions are available here.
What happens if I try to enter the United States without a valid travel signature?
If your airline enables you to board the plane without a legitimate signature, there are three (3) possible scenarios when you get at the US airport:
The immigration officer may just depend on your electronic SEVIS record in their system and allow you to the US for "D/S," which indicates for the entire period of your status/studies.
Under the I-515A temporary admission provision, the immigration officer may admit you for 30 days.
If this occurs, please meet with your ISSS advisor as soon as possible (within two business days), as this is time-sensitive.ISSS will reopen on January 2nd after the winter break.
The immigration officer may refuse you entry into the United States.
Is it possible for ISSS to email me a digital copy of my I-20/DS-2019?
The US government prohibits the distribution/sharing of copies of immigration documents (scanned, faxed, emailed, etc.). That is a violation of federal law in the United States. Only the US Departments of State and Homeland Security have access to a copy. If your home country's airport has a DHS office (as do some international airports), a US DHS official could obtain a copy of your I-20/DS-2019 from ISSS.
What should I do if I encounter problems while passing through US Customs?
If you have any problems at the airport, please ask an immigration officer to call Emory ISSS at 404-727-3300 (during business hours) or 404-727-6111 (after hours). The latter number is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week since it connects to Emory Police, who know how to reach an ISSS on-call person.
