Errors in Passports And How To Avoid Them

Passports are the most important item for foreign travel, but they are also one of the most difficult to obtain. The passport application procedure has a minimal margin for error in order to be successful, yet the possibilities of things going wrong are endless. Every blunder can slow down the process and jeopardize your global trip plans. Fortunately, CIBT has assisted thousands of tourists just like you with the passport application procedure. We've taken the most common faults we notice and put together six of our best advice to avoid some common passport mistakes.

1. Not First Checking To See If You Need A Passport

While most countries require a valid passport to enter their country, this is not always the case. Even if your preferred destination does not require a passport, your home country will almost certainly require one in order for you to re-enter the country. Check the passport requirements for your intended vacation destination.

2. Submitting an application too close to your departure date

It's generally a good idea to give yourself as much time as possible for the passport application procedure. We recommend that you begin the application process at least three months before your intended departure date. Even a faultless passport application may take longer than usual due to COVID-19 delays.

If you need to renew your passport, you should begin the procedure eight to eleven months before your trip. Most nations, including the US, would not let you in if your passport expires in less than six months. There are ways to speed up the passport application process, but the more time you give yourself, the less anxious you will be.

Is your vacation scheduled to take place within the next three months? Enlist the services of CIBT to speed the process and see what we can do for you.

3. Inadequate Application Documentation

When applying for a passport, you must provide proof of citizenship as well as official passport images. Birth certificates and driver's licenses are the most commonly used documents, but any document you give must be the original or a certified copy. Make no attempt to utilize a hospital certificate or a photocopy!

Check for a registrar's raised seal, signature, and the official date the certificate or license was submitted on your evidence of citizenship. Certificates must be authenticated within one year of your birth date, and licenses must be at least six months old.

Passport photos cannot be taken with a phone or even by a professional photographer; instead, you should go to a photographer who specializes in passport photos. Official pictures will be charged a nominal price by Walgreens, CVS, AAA, and other organizations. They are aware of the specific measures required for the photograph as well as how to frame your face in them. Photos must also be taken within six months of the start of your application fee. The closer they are to when you submit your application, the better.

You will also need to send the passport processing fee. Despite our increasingly digital society, you must pay by check or postal money order if you mail in your application. Unfortunately, you cannot send cash. If you go directly to the passport agency, you may be able to pay electronically, although this is not an option for everyone. If you apply by mail, you should also include a check or money order.

4. Failure to Complete the Form Correctly

Passport typos are one of the most common errors in applications. It's tempting to rush through the documentation and complete it as soon as possible, but you don't want to risk making any mistakes with this program. The documentation demands a pen, not a pencil, and any traces of white-out, cross-out, or erasing on your application may make it difficult for the authorities to input your information correctly on your passport. If your passport has any flaws, international authorities will most likely deny you entry into your target country.

It is preferable to apply when you have lots of time and a clear head. Make sure you have all of your documents with you so you don't get up and risk losing your seat. With everything close at hand, you can effortlessly transmit the data to the program. If you are filling out the application on behalf of another person, please sure they are there as well.

5. Failure to double-check everything

Even if you follow everything to the letter, a passport error could get through. When you're finished, save all of your papers in a secure place and revisit them later with fresh eyes. Allow a trusted buddy to double-check the facts for you as well—they may notice something you missed.
